Why There is No 13th Sign in Astrology?

Astrology has always been a fascinating subject. It has been studied for centuries. Essentially, it is the study of celestial bodies and their movement, which is believed to have an impact on human lives. There are 12 signs in astrology, and each sign is ruled by a different planet or element. However, some people wonder why there is no 13th sign in astrology.

In this blog post, we will explore the history of astrology, why there isn’t a 13th sign, and the confusion surrounding this topic.

Astrology dates back to ancient times, from Mesopotamian culture to Egyptian, Greek, and Indian. The Zodiac sign framework was developed from Babylonian astrology around 600 BCE, and it was then adopted by the Greeks. The 12 signs of the Zodiac were created around 2000 years ago by ancient astronomers who observed the movement of the planets in the sky.

Thus, through their observations, they assigned characteristics, elements, and ruling planets to each sign. All followed by the Zodiac system that we still use today.

The first thing you need to know is that there is a 13th sign in astrology known as Ophiuchus, the Serpent Bearer. Ophiuchus, also known as the rejected sign, is a constellation that the Sun actually passes through for 18-19 days of the year.

However, the ancient astronomers who established the Zodiac system thousands of years ago did not include Ophiuchus as a sign. Why? Because the Zodiac system was created based on the position of the sun relative to the constellations almost 2000 years ago.

Since then, the Earth’s axis has shifted slightly, and the Sun’s position has changed because of our planet’s wobble. This is known as the precession of the equinoxes. So, basically, the Zodiac sign framework is no longer aligned with the stars.

Many people get confused about the inclusion of a 13th sign. A lot of scientific researchers believe that Ophiuchus should be included as a sign. They argue that the Zodiac system would be more accurate if all 13 constellations were included. However, astrologers and enthusiasts disagree.

In its essence, astrology is more of a symbolic language and it is about the interpretation of the movement of the planets based on their position in the sky and their movement in relation to specific events and relationships.

Therefore, the system does not need to be scientifically accurate. The symbolic meaning of the Zodiac signs is determined by their characteristics, qualities, and personality traits. Thus, these are determined based on the elements, modes, and ruling planets assigned to each sign by ancient astronomers.

Adding a 13th sign in astrology could affect the Zodiac signs and their traditional meanings. Ophiuchus has characteristics of its own, which could be considered disruptive to the traditional system.

However, What we can not deny is that the existence of Ophiuchus is intriguing and could serve as a conversation starter for anyone interested in astrology.
